Responsible Fishing

Healthy marine ecosystems are important to the long-term sustainability of our business and supply chain. For this reason, our fleet operates in accordance with applicable regulations and established operational standards, while our seafood sourcing is guided by recognised industry initiatives and frameworks, including the conservation measures of the International Seafood Sustainability Foundation (ISSF), the requirements of Regional Fisheries Management Organisations (RFMOs), and, where applicable, the standards of Marine Stewardship Council (MSC) certification schemes.

MSC certification

MSC Certification

Bolton supports Marine Stewardship Council (MSC) certification, an independent, third-party standard for responsible fisheries management. The MSC standard is built on three principles: sustainable fish stocks, minimisation of environmental impact, and effective fisheries management.

Responsible use of FADs

FAD Management

FADs (Fish Aggregating Devices) are floating objects used to attract tuna, improving fishing effectiveness. They can also lead to bycatch and marine pollution. Our vessels use 100% biodegradable FADs.

Transparency and traceability

Traceability in Our Tuna Supply Chain

Bolton has developed a traceability system for canned tuna products, certified according to the ISO 22005 standard. This system enables us to trace each can of tuna from the moment the tuna is caught until it reaches the consumer.

100% of tuna we source is compliant with International Seafood Sustainability Foundation (ISSF) conservation measures.

Measures to Limit Bycatch

The bycatch of non-target species is a recognised environmental challenge in the fishing industry. To address this, Bolton has implemented specific measures across its fleet operations to minimise bycatch and to release non-target species back into the sea as promptly as possible.
