Rio Mare Removes Plastic Waste from the Sea in Greece
As part of our commitment to protect and preserve our marine ecosystem, our Rio Mare brand partnered with the international environmental organisation MEDASSE. Together we carried out a series of seabed clean-ups to remove plastic waste and abandoned nets from the seas around Greece.
A staggering amount of plastic ends up in the oceans every year, with 80% coming from land and the rest from human activities at sea.
2 tonnes of plastic waste removed
As the focal point of our partnership, we focused on the removal of ghost nets from the sea. ‘Ghost nets’ are thick, plastic nets that have been abandoned and trap fish and turtles while polluting the marine ecosystem. We successfully removed two tonnes of plastic waste from the sea.
