On November 12, 2025, our brand Rio Mare celebrates a historic milestone: 60 years of excellence in the world of canned fish, a journey built on quality, constant research, and a unique bond with millions of consumers. An anniversary that is not just a number, but a testament to continuous evolution, guided by passion, responsibility, and strategic vision.
Since its launch, Rio Mare has brought to market a product that is innovative in terms of taste, texture, and production process.
It’s been 60 years since the Rio Mare brand was registered in Milan, and it all started in 1965 with a single business insight from Bolton’s founder, Joseph Nissim: why sell tuna in huge cans when it could be served in smaller portions?
That’s how our famous single-serving canned tuna was born.
The famous pink packaging quickly won over Italian families, becoming synonymous with reliability, food safety, and unmistakable taste.
Ever since that single insight, Rio Mare has been able to revive a traditional craft that has always been part of the Italian food culture, making high-quality tuna in olive oil even more quintessential.
Several factors have been key to this 60-year journey: the know-how to craft products that best represent the Italian taste, memorable TV advertisements, great retail visibility, but most of all the product’s quality, which is not only the highest, but it’s also heightened by the presence of olive oil, making our products distinctive and unique in taste, perfect to be served alone or to make great recipes. Finally, continuous innovation has also been playing a significant role, intersecting every aspect of our production from recipes to packaging.
What will the future bring?
