Towards a More Circular Economy
To protect our planet, we need to go beyond conservation and reconsider the entire lifecycle of production and consumption. That's why we're committed to becoming more circular. We believe that this approach can, over time, help support the more efficient use of resources and reduce waste.
Responsible Sourcing and Use of Raw Materials
Bolton is committed to reducing the environmental and social impact of its ingredients and raw materials.
For the company's food activities, we are committed to responsible sourcing of tuna, mackerel, sardines, anchovies, mussels, salmon, beef, vegetables and oil. For beef, we work with suppliers that follow the principles of the Global Roundtable for Sustainable Beef, emphasizing the importance of animal health and ensuring traceability. For vegetables and oil our policies ask suppliers to manage soil and water responsibly and minimise the use of pesticides.
In the Home Care, Personal Care and Beauty categories, we aim to replace fossil based ingredients with natural ingredients and have blacklisted certain ingredients in search of more sustainable alternatives.

Winni’s Bio-Fermentation
Our Home Care brand, Winni's, uses bio-fermentation — a natural process widely used in the food and pharmaceutical industries — to produce cleaning ingredients from renewable materials such as oils and sugars. Yeast ferments these materials to generate surfactants of natural origin, which are then used in Winni's liquid laundry and hand dishwashing detergents.
These bio-based actives are formulated to deliver an effective cleaning performance whilst reducing our reliance on ingredients derived from petrochemicals. Bio-fermentation is one of the ways in which Winni's improves the environmental profile of its products.
Water-Less Beauty
Bolton has adopted a waterless approach to selected product formulations with the aim of improving environmental performance.
These products are more concentrated by eliminating water, which means they require less packaging material per unit of active ingredient. This contributes to reduced transport emissions compared to conventional water-based products. Examples include Collistar's Cleansing Butter and Cream-Powder Cleanser. Cavaillès and Omia have also adopted this approach with their solid face care range and solid shampoo products, respectively.
Reducing Our Packaging Footprint
In collaboration with WWF Italy, we assessed the sustainability of our packaging and identified areas for improvement, particularly regarding the responsible use of plastics. The aim of this partnership was to strengthen our packaging policies and procedures, and to drive sustainable innovation towards our packaging goals.
As part of this collaboration, we reviewed our Packaging Policy, which sets out our strategy for promoting a circular economy in packaging.
Waste Reduction in Our Operations
In our operations, we prioritize reusing, recycling, or responsibly disposing of waste to minimize landfill and incineration without energy recovery. We are actively engaging with specialized companies and local authorities to explore suitable treatment solutions for each waste type. Additionally, we are identifying potential synergies with private and public entities in our local communities interested in waste recovery and valorization initiatives.
Packaging Ethical Charter Foundation
In 2023, we became ambassadors of the Packaging Ethical Charter Foundation (Fondazione Carta Etica del Packaging). This foundation promotes shared values within the packaging supply chain, aligning our activities with the principles of the Ethical Packaging Charter, with a focus on safety, transparency, and sustainability.
